The highlights of the event year in Freiburg
Large procession on the Monday of the Fasnacht carnival
The highlight of the Alemannic Fasnacht carnival is a gathering of all the Fasnacht organisations from the whole of the vicinity for the large Rosenmontag [Shrove Monday] procession in Freiburg. Floats and colourful costumes can be seen on the streets. People hidden under wild, almost sinister masks play jokes on others until late at night.

Internationales Zelt-Musik-Festival
International Music-Tent-Festival
The Zelt-Musik festival has been one of the top cultural events in Freiburg for years. For three weeks a city of tents offers an unparalleled range of all music genres - rock, pop, jazz, blues and classical. In addition, further events from the areas of dance and variety take place. In midnight jam sessions the visitors of the festival can experience the artists "up close and personal". The circus tent, tent of mirrors, performance stage, hot-dog stands and lawns for sunbathing - encircled by a terraced hilly landscape, enlivened by artists and the audience - make a visit at the Zelt-Musik-Festival an unforgettable experience.

Courtyards Festival and Museum Night
In its historic Old Town, Freiburg disposes of a numerous picturesque courtyards. The "courtyards festival"offers visitors not only something for the eye, but above all for the ear: Approximately 50 concerts of soloists and ensembles, from 8:00 p.m. to midnight respectively, produce wonderful music in the dreamy courtyards. All municipal museums are open until late, allowing visitors to obtain an insight into their collections from a special perspective.
Freiburg wine festival
Wine growers' cooperatives and wine growers invite you to a festival with food and wine on the Münsterplatz: More than 400 wines and sparkling wines representing the variety and extraordinary quality of the region's produce will be available to drink. Renowned restaurants in Freiburg and the region around serve the ideal complement to the wine: Badisch specialities and international cuisine. The offerings of food extend from the typical Zwiebelkuchen [onion tart] to the gourmet dishes for the connoisseur.
Freiburg Christmas market
The Freiburg Christmas Market on the Rathausplatz in the heart of the Old Town is considered one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in the whole of Germany. It is not only an unmistakable tradition for residents of Freiburg, as thousands of visitors come every year from far away to capture its unique charm. The appeal of the market lies both in the impressive backdrop of the square with its historic buildings as well as in the assortment of things for sale. Framed by the Gothic cloister of the one-time Franciscan monastery, the nave of St. Martin's Church and the picturesque, newly renovated facades of the new and old town halls, an enchanting collection of little houses is erected four weeks before Christmas. The Freiburg Christmas market is very much part of a tradition of Black Forest Christmas markets. This year, visitors will also see woodcarvers, gem cutters, glass blowers, potters, candlestick makers and straw artists in the narrow market streets. And all this will be coupled with the inimitable aroma of gingerbread, mulled wine, spices, roasted almonds, hot chestnuts, potato noodles, Black Forest ham and bacon sauerkraut.
Dates: 23 November - 23 December 2009
